The unhealthy, non-beneficial foods that deteriorate our health tend to be the foods that we love the most. A good example is greasy foods. Among this list, there is one drink that many would expect to see but seems to be missing, and that is coffee. Coffee, being one of the most popular drinks in the United States, surprisingly has many health benefits.
The National Coffee Association (NCA) took a survey and found that 64% of American adults drink at least one cup of coffee a day. Many of those same coffee drinkers that were interviewed for the survey were found to be at a significantly lower risk of many diseases and conditions that have a probability of fatality than those who choose to abstain from drinking coffee.
Medical research collected from multiple journals and sources identified a number of benefits linked to drinking coffee. From reduced risk of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S. to an improved mood and even a reduced risk of depression, coffee has a far range of benefits. To further prove the benefit of drinking coffee, researchers completed these studies in America’s leading heart disease capitals.
Despite popular belief, caffeine is not the only component of coffee. Although caffeine does have its benefits, other properties in coffee are where a majority of these benefits sprouted from.Caffeine itself has benefits linked to a reduced risk of a number of diseases and conditions, including depression, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Although daily coffee consumption has proven to have positive effects, Mayo Clinic found that drinking four or more cups of coffee a day can lead to irritability, an upset stomach, migraine headaches and even muscle tremors. It’s important to limit consumption to a reasonable amount of cups a day.
Protection against Parkinson’s Disease
A study published in 2007, caffeine was found to directly correlate to Parkinson’s Disease. Research found coffee drinkers are less likely to develop the neurological disorder than those who don’t drink coffee at all.
Reduces risk of multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord. The immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body. Study revealed that increasing coffee consumption reduces chances of developing MS. This benefit likely contributes to caffeine’s neuroprotective properties.
Lowers risk of type 2 diabetes
Coffee has been proven to contain certain minerals and active compounds that can reduce risk of type 2 diabetes, AN 11-year study of nearly 29,000 menopausal women found six or more cups of coffee daily can reduce their chances by 22%.
Lowered risk of Alzheimer’s Disease
Occurence of this disease is expected to almost triple by 2050. Study done in the European Journal of Neurology found that study participants who consumed the equivalent of roughly two cups of coffee daily for 20 years are significantly likely to contract this disease.
Protects against cirrhosis of the liver
Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver does not function properly due to long-term damage. This damage is characterized by the replacement of normal liver tissue by scar tissue. Many conditions can lead to cirrhosis, but the most common is sustained alcohol abuse. Several studies have found that regular consumption of coffee reduces damage to the liver as well as likelihood of death for those who have developed cirrhosis.
Reduces suicide risk and depression
Caffeine has been shown to have an inverse effect on depression. A study conducted controlled a number of variables including alcohol use, drug use, stress and marital status in order to prove a point. They found that female coffee drinkers were far less likely to commit suicide than those who didn’t.
Reduces risk of heart disease
Regarding heart disease, there is no better prevention tool than a healthy diet and lifestyle. A study published in 2015 found that moderate coffee consumption is linked to a lower occurrence of coronary heart disease.
Reduces heart attack mortality risk
Coffee can not only decrease an individual’s risk of developing coronary artery disease, but it can also reduce the risk of mortality among those who suffer a heart attack. Heavy coffee drinkers who have suffered a heart attack, are at lower risk of mortality compared to those who don’t drink coffee.
Reduces liver cancer risk
A study conducted by researchers at USC shows that adults who drink coffee on a daily basis can reduce their risk of liver cancer by 29%. A recent study done by University of Southampton and University of Edinburgh, researchers found that people who drank one cup a day had a 20% lower risk of liver cancer, drinking 2 cups reduced risk by 35% and drinking 5 cups reduced risk by 50%.
Reduces risk of stroke
A study published in 2009 found correlation between coffee consumption and lowered risk of stroke. A long-term study followed over 80,000 nurses and found that women who drank at least two cups of coffee a day reduced their risk by 20%, regardless of pre-existing risk factors such as high blood pressure.
